Have you ever met some one who performs on an entirely different level? That person who seems to succeed even under the most unlikely of circumstances? What is it that sets these people apart from the rest?

Homeland’s Carrie Mathison. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Chloe from 24. We all have our favorite Hollywood intelligence analyst, who can seamlessly task satellite imagery from a moving vehicle while taking fire during a car chase, successfully averting a global crisis. In real life, today’s analyst is hand-jamming GPS coordinates into an Excel 2007 workbook because the Marine she’s trying to direct toward the right building in a rural village can’t accept data from her system, & the Corps hasn’t updated to Office 2013 yet.

The action-packed dramas that captivate us put the human in the driver’s seat with advanced technology at her fingertips. In real life, the security community relegates her to best supporting actor - valuing, investing in, and placing all its hopes for the future in technology by itself. Through careers working at the seam of tech and analysis, we’ve discovered a new answer: the secret ingredient in the U.S. National Security community’s future success is not AI or automation - it’s the human analyst of the future who will wield those tools.

The evening will begin with a short keynote from Jacqueline (Jackie) Barbieri, Founder & CEO of Whitespace solutions followed by interactive panel discussion featuring Serena Kelleher-Vergantini, Analyst & Product Manager for GeoSpark Analytics, and Jacqueline Tame, Senior Advisor for Strategic Assessment & Integration for the Office of the Secretary of Defense (Invited).

Jacqueline (Jackie) Barbieri
Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Whitespace Solutions

Jacqueline and her team at Whitespace Solutions are redefining how people and organizations think about and interact with data and technology. Building on over a decade invested in developing and implementing ground-breaking data collection and analytic approaches in the defense, intelligence, and commercial sectors, Jacqueline is now focused on hacking the human capacity to do good. She spent her early career in national security intelligence as an analyst, experimenting with new approaches for harnessing research, analysis, and automation in a mission context. She later shifted her focus to scaling adoption of high-impact analytic methods, technology, and data models, like Activity-Based Intelligence (ABI), to new issues and markets. Jacqueline and her team at Whitespace are now pioneering an extensible framework for augmenting human intelligence in the service of global impact organizations. Jacqueline holds a Master of Arts in Security Studies, and a Bachelor of Science in International Politics, both from Georgetown University. Mrs. Barbieri has proficiency in Spanish, Arabic and is conversational in Italian.

Serena Kelleher-Vergantini
Product Manager, GeoSpark Analytics

As Product Manager at GeoSpark Analytics, Serena oversees the development of Hyperion, a platform that leverages open source data and machine learning for global threat and risk assessment.

Previously, Serena was a well-published open source analyst specialized in nuclear weapons proliferation. She was a Nuclear Analyst at Spatial Networks, Inc and a Research Analyst at the Institute for Science and International Security where she assessed high-resolution commercial satellite imagery of known and suspected nuclear sites. At the Institute, she co-authored the 2015 Plutonium and Highly Enriched Uranium Inventories, a collection of studies containing comprehensive estimates of plutonium and HEU worldwide. She also conducted research and analysis for the Institute’s Technical Assessments on Iran’s Nuclear Program.

Serena holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Perugia (Italy), an M.A in Comparative Constitutional and International Law from LUISS Guido Carli (Italy), and an M.A. in International Affairs with a specialization in Intelligence and Weapons of Mass Destruction from The George Washington University (Washington DC).

Jacqueline Sarah Tame
Senior Advisor for Strategic Assessment and Integration,  Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence (OUSD(I))

Jacqueline is leading Departmental efforts to assess the roles and missions of its intelligence components and designing a comprehensive approach to the conduct of strategic assessments within and across the Defense Intelligence Enterprise. She joined OUSD(I) following over a decade in the Intelligence Community (IC) and overseeing IC programs on the Hill.

Jacqueline began her career at the Central Intelligence Agency, leading a team of futures analysts to inform strategic acquisition planning.  She then transitioned to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, where she supported the development of IC priorities and publication of the Community’s planning and programming guidance, and led IC and DoD-wide policy reviews to inform the IC’s Capability Requirements and Major Systems Acquisition processes. Finally, Jacqueline served at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), first as a Counterterrorism Mission Manager, then as Senior Policy Advisor to the Chief Performance Officer and Deputy Director.  In 2015 Jacqueline was selected to serve for a year as the only civilian Director Fellow on the Chief of Naval Operations’ Strategic Studies Group, before returning to DIA as the Chief of Customer Engagement – where she focused specifically on DIA’s support to the Combatant Commands.

In early 2017 Jacqueline joined the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) where she served as the monitor for DIA. During her tenure on the HPSCI, Jacqueline designed and led a 14-month long review of DIA’s roles and missions, made recommendations for significant mission-related reform, and codified findings and legislative recommendations in a Committee report and in the FY19 National Defense Authorization Act.

Jacqueline has a Bachelor of Arts degree in French language and literature and a Master of Public Affairs degree from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as a Masters in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.
