The Leadership Foundry and WIT are passionate about increasing the number of women on corporate boards in our region. We invite you to Keep the Conversation Going. Come and hear our distinguished panel discuss: finding their first board position; their experiences serving on the board; the challenges they faced and how they overcame them; the benefits to companies with women serving and why boards need diversity to succeed. Confirmed panelists are Laura Olle, Susan Swain and Wendelin White. The panel will be moderated by Jennifer Nycz-Connor of the Washington Business Journal.

There will be networking before and after the address. The registration fee includes wine, beer, beverages and hors d’oeuvres. The location is Metro accessible.

Panelists

Laura N. Olle currently serves as the Chair of the Consumer Experience and Compliance Committee and Member of the Nominating and Corporate Governance and Audit Committees for the Board of Directors of the Encore Capital Group, Inc., an international specialty finance company that provides debt recovery solutions for consumers and property owners across a broad range of assets. She also serves on the board of Morgan Stanley Private Bank.

Laura started her career as a management consultant for Arthur Young and Company. She then held key senior roles in information technology for a number of major companies, including the Senior Vice President, Information Systems and Services, at Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac). In 1999, Laura joined Capital One Financial Corporation in McLean, VA, as a Senior Vice President and Co-Chief Information Officer. In 2002, she was named Executive Vice President and Chief Enterprise Risk Officer at Capital One, a new position that centralized the executive management oversight of the company’s enterprise risk management activities. She was responsible for independently monitoring, analyzing and reporting on key corporate risk areas to include strategic, operations, legal and compliance, and managing regulatory relationships. In 2007, she left Capital One and now serves as an independent consultant.

Laura graduated from the State University of New York with an Honors Degree in Psychology and received her MBA from the University of Nebraska. She is a certified public accountant and completed the Stanford Executive Program in 1998. Laura lives in Washington, D.C.


Susan M. Swain serves on the board of directors at Discovery, Inc. She is a member of the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee and the Audit Committee.

In March 2012, Ms. Swain was named co-CEO and President of C-SPAN, a multichannel national distributor (TV, radio, internet) of public affairs content. She had served as President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of C-SPAN since December 2006. She has been with C-SPAN since 1982.

Ms. Swain also serves as a director of the C-SPAN Education Foundation and as a member of the Executive Committee of the National Press Foundation. She served as a director of The Talbots, Inc. from 2001 until The Talbots ceased to be a public company in 2012. She was Chairperson of The Talbots’ Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee and was a member of its Audit Committee. She was appointed as its Lead Independent Director in May 2010.

Ms. Swain holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from University of Scranton (PA). She served as a trustee of the University for six years and in 1999, the school awarded her an honorary doctorate.

 

Wendelin (Wendy) White sits on the board of Chevy Chase Trust Company, a private investment advisory firm with over $30B under management.  She served on the board of Washington Real Estate Investment Trust, a public REIT (and the oldest public REIT in the country), for over 8 years until August 2016 and chaired the Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee of that board for 5 years.

Ms. White is a Director at the law firm Goulston & Storrs PC, and Chair of the Real Estate Transactions group in the firm's Washington DC office. When she joined Goulston in August 2016, she reunited with a zoning and land use group and former colleagues from Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, where she practiced law for over 30 years. She is a Past President of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) DC, and is devoted to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital, on whose boards she serves.  She also sits on the board of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. 

She and her husband, Paul Feinberg, live in Chevy Chase, MD, and have two 27-year old daughters, one in graduate school in NH and the other working in the DC area.

 

Moderator

Jennifer Nycz-Conner is the Editor-at-Large and a columnist for the Washington Business Journal, a business weekly in the Washington, D.C. region. Her award-winning weekly column, “Working the Room,” chronicles office life and the after-hours networking adventures of some of Washington’s top business leaders. She also frequently serves as a moderator for Washington business events.

As Editor-at-Large, she helps create content through events, video and online. She also recently served as the morning drive money news anchor on WTOP 103.5 FM.

She also managed the Business Journal’s video operations, serving as its producer and editor.

Before joining the Washington Business Journal, Jen served as the executive director of Women in Film & Video of Washington, D.C., a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the role of women in the film, television and media industries. She also worked in television production and show development for ProServ, which eventually became part of Clear Channel Entertainment.

She started her career working on television productions, including projects with HBO Sports, “The McLaughlin Group” and commercials, music videos and documentaries. She holds a B.S. and an M.S. from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
