On the Shoulders of Women Past: Kicking off Women’s History Month

Womens History Month

Today, across the United States, the UK, and Australia, Women’s History Month recognitions begin as the month unfolds.  Combined with the commemoration of International Women’s Day celebrated around the world on March 8, it is a time of year to reflect on the vast contributions of women to global culture, economic vitality, history and society.

As an organization focused squarely on the work of women in the technology industry, Women in Technology is perfectly poised to shine a light on the contributions of women in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.    Indeed these fields continue to be a focus of optimism and challenge.  From President Obama’s commitment STEM, to yesterday’s Executive Order from President Trump to encourage women in STEM fields, there is tremendous understanding of the economic promise that comes with women reaching their full potential in STEM fields.  We also see renewed commitment to improving the number of women who enter and work in arenas ranging from medicine and artificial intelligence to engineering, software, and cybersecurity.

In the spirit of Women’s History Month, Women in Technology will use this blog to honor women doing amazing work across technology roles and organizations.   As we move towards our seminal May 2017 Leadership Awards event, we will show and tell real life stories of women who are rising, leading, and paving the way.

We begin by recognizing that the education, opportunities, and careers we now enjoy are built on the foundation of our mothers, grandmothers, and those pioneering women who came before us.

Look no further than last year’s Large Market Sector winner Kay Kapoor, AT&Ts President of Global Business Public Sector unit.  Kay spoke with Women in Technology and shared how her own mother serves as an inspiration to the works she does every day.

With Kay as our leading inspiration, we look forward to sharing insights from fantastic women of all ages, careers, and life stages over the comings days and weeks.    Enjoy!
