Mary-Claire Burrick, President, Rosslyn Business Improvement DistrictThursday September 15th marked the kick-off of the first WITConnect. This year Women in Technology’s WITConnect series is themed #WITBestSelf. Each of our 2016/2017 monthly WITConnects will focus on a different way to support participants in being more confident, aware, savvy and current within the realm of the technology space.

September’s guest speaker was Mary-Claire Burick, President of Rosslyn Business Improvement District. She has a background in engaging people to reach organizational goals and was able to translate that into an interactive workshop on reaching our personal networking goals.

Participants were asked to create a Personal Plan of Action around four different aspects of networking. Before attending any networking event, participants were encouraged to do some planning and consider:

  • What do I want?
  • What do I bring?
  • How can I help others?
  • Who can help me?

Knowing the answers to those questions before going into any event will help you be more purposeful and relaxed as you engage with other prospective contacts.  As participants shared in small and large groups some of their own experiences, we heard things like:

  • Going in with the goal of helping others often yields better results because you automatically become across more genuine.
  • “My elevator pitch is different every time so getting some feedback on it was extremely helpful”
  • Follow up after networking is critical and people are impressed when you do

Participants walked away with a Personal Plan of Action that they could fill out at home before attending their next networking event. Everyone also walked away with several business cards and some new friends.

Next month’s session is titled The Internet of Things (IoT): New Opportunities and New Risks and is scheduled to take place on Thursday October 20th at the Tegna/Gannett Building in McLean.

Mark your calendars and come learn about the unprecedented opportunities for business innovation and personal convenience.
